Seattle Post Intelligencer Interviews
Anthony Tesselaar on "Overnight Success

The Seattle Post Intelligencer published a story by columnist Marty Wingate based on her interview with Australian plantman Anthony Tesselaar. The story focussed on the long years of selection and trial behind such easy-care Tesselaar plant sensations as Flower Carpet roses and Festival Grass cordylines.

She wrote, "The Flower Carpet rose -- introduced in 1990 in its eye-popping pink pots -- took our gardens by storm. A ground-cover rose that needs little attention, yet blooms continually for months on end. An overnight success, it seemed."

She went on to quote Anthony, "Everyone loves success," Anthony Tesselaar, owner of Anthony Tesselaar Plants, told me via e-mail. "Our process was to find exceptional plants that would provide the outcome the consumer was looking for, with a minimum of fuss."

The article went on to tell more about the Tesselaar process of finding and trialing plants and also about the importance today of plant patents. In conclusion Ms. Wingate wrote, "It isn't an easy or quick road from new plant discovery to mass retail, but gardeners don't consider that part of the gardening world -- we concentrate on getting that red-leaved Cordyline 'Jurred' -- Festival Grass to us -- into a particularly fetching glazed pot."

Ms. Wingate also interviewed Anthony on her Public Radio panel show.
