FLOWERS & FOLIAGE

While Cordyline Burgundy Spire™ does produce half metre (20") long panicles of purple flowers in late spring, these are eclipsed by the year-round show of glossy, deep burgundy leaves. In fact, most landscapers plant this cordyline to take full advantage of the texture and movement of its foliage.

PLANTING TIPS

When planting more than one Cordyline Burgundy Spire, be sure to allow two metres (6ft) between plants. Choose a site preferably in full sun to allow the foliage to develop its colour fully, though this cordyline will grow in part shade. It’s also adaptable to a wide range of soils from extremes of dry to wet, preferring acid soils.

WAYS TO USE THEM

There are so many ways to capitalise on what Cordyline Burgundy Spire has to offer. A staggered row will screen a boundary or frame the back of a deep garden bed. Dot them through a mixed garden bed to add textured punctuation. Or set an odd-numbered cluster of them into a gravel mulched space to create a minimalist copse.

SHAPE & SIZE

Cordyline Burgundy Spire is a showy architectural plant that will grow to the impressive height of four metres. It will also spread about 1 metre wide. And while it is essentially upright in habit, the leaves tend to fold gently downwards so that it appears to wear its foliage like a layered dress. Zones 8-11

FOOD & WATER

This cordyline is a great asset in the dry garden as established plants can withstand long periods of dry, windy conditions. In prolonged drought, Cordyline Burgundy Spire does benefit from the occasional deep watering. In terms of food, a balanced control release fertiliser is ideal, and in the case of this plant, less is more.

PESTS & DISEASE

Cordyline Burgundy Spire has earned a reputation for being tough and easy care, so not surprisingly, it is not bothered by pests or disease.
