Magnolia Fairy Magnolia series

Fairy Magnolias® aren’t like any other magnolia. They are bushy. They are evergreen. They cover themselves in a blanket of fragrant flowers in spring. They also have a reputation for growing easily and quickly. Put this all together and you have a brilliant, hard-working hero of a plant that’s available in three magical colours.

FLOWERS & FOLIAGE FLOWERS & FOLIAGE

Fairy Magnolias have a compact, bushy growth habit with medium dark green foliage. Flower buds open at virtually every leaf axil, each opening to fragrant blooms 6cm (2.5") across. Fairy Magnolia flowers early to late spring with spot flowers year round.

PLANTING TIPS PLANTING TIPS

These magnolias are happy growing in full sun through to part shade. They'll grow in any soil but do prefer well worked crumbling soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged locations.

WAYS TO USE THEM WAYS TO USE THEM

Fairy Magnolias are ideal small specimen trees especially where a show-stopper is needed, but space is limited. And since they are naturally bushy, they also make fabulous flower-smothered hedges: to hide or mark a boundary.

SHAPE & SIZE SHAPE & SIZE

Fairy Magnolias have an upright, bushy growth habit, maturing to form a tall bush or small tree 3-4m high, and 1½-2m wide. If spacing a row of plants to form a dense hedge, set them one metre apart.

FOOD & WATER FOOD & WATER

These magnolias perform best when watered moderately over summer. They will handle drier conditions once established. In the garden, apply general fertiliser after the spring flower-show: in containers use a slow release fertiliser in spring & autumn.

PESTS & DISEASE PESTS & DISEASE

Fairy Magnolias are an easy-care plant so they aren't usually susceptible to diseases but they can occasionally suffer minor leaf spotting if growing in crowded, low light conditions. No major issues with pests.

  • These magnolias grow well through part shade to full sun, useful where even growth is needed across a range of light conditions
  • Fairy Magnolias establish easily and quickly
  • Maintenance is low where plants are left to grow naturally; clip annually post-flowering for a formal hedging or topiary effect
  • In confined spaces Fairy Magnolia can be grown as a specimen tree with a significant floral show in spring
  • To create feature containers, plant Fairy Magnolia to form a spectacular canopy over a mixed understory of grasses, perennials and season annuals and bulbs
